Dog Friendly Hiking Trails near the Smoky Mountains

As you plan your outdoor adventures, keep in mind that some hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are off-limits to dogs. You can learn more about the park’s pet rules here. However, dogs are welcome at campgrounds, picnic areas, and along roadsides, as well as nearby spaces such as Chattahoochee National Forest and Cherokee National Forest. 

There are also two amazing dog friendly hiking trails in the park that allow your furry friend to join you! 

Gatlinburg Trail 

The first trail you will want to check out is the Gatlinburg Trail. This 1.9 mile, one-way trail from Sugarland Visitor Center welcomes both dogs and bicycles. Soak in beautiful views of the river, which features a charming pedestrian footbridge, as well as foundations and chimneys of several old home sites that are visible along the way. This relatively flat hike is moderate in difficulty and can be enjoyed by both dogs and their owners. This trail is a great way to get out and explore the stunning Smoky Mountains with your pets!

Oconaluftee River Trail

The second trail to enjoy with your pup is the Oconaluftee River Trail, a 1.5 mile one-way, moderate and fairly flat hike from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center to the outskirts of the city of Cherokee, NC. This beautiful trail offers stunning views of the Oconaluftee River and is frequented by joggers, walkers, and bicyclists. We highly recommend this as a great place to take your dog.
